Web search: turn it on or off
Web search is off for every new firm. How the owner turns it on, how staff use it in a chat, and exactly what it sends outside your workspace.
- Who:
- Owners turn it on; everyone uses it per chat
- Where:
- Dashboard and workspace
- Updated:
Web search lets the AI look up current information on the public web, such as IRS guidance, the eCFR and court websites, read the pages (including PDFs) and cite them. It is off for every new firm until the owner turns it on.
What it sends outside your workspace
When someone uses web search, the AI writes search terms from the conversation. Those terms can include words from it, such as a client’s name. They go through our own search server to public search engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Brave, Wikipedia, the Federal Register and CourtListener), and the pages found are fetched so the AI can read them. The search engines see our server, not your staff’s computers.
Your uploaded documents are never sent to search engines. While web search is off, our search service is not connected to your workspace at all.
Turn it on (owner)
- In the dashboard, go to Settings > Web search and choose On.
- Read the notice, then tick “I understand that search terms leave our workspace and go to public search engines.”
- Select Save. Web search is available in your workspace within a few minutes; people may need to reload it.
Only the owner can change this setting, and the change is recorded in your audit log. To turn web search off again, choose Off and save.
Use it in a chat
Even with web search on, every chat starts with it off. To use it, turn on Search under the message box for that chat. Answers that used it say Searched the web and list their sources, so you can check them.
Turn it on only when the question needs current information from the web. For questions about your own documents, leave it off.
