Legal memos

First drafts of legal memos, with every authority left for you to verify.

Turn facts and notes into a structured memo in your firm’s house style. The Legal Memo assistant drafts; your lawyers pull, read and confirm every case and statute before anyone relies on it.

How it works

The Legal Memo assistant, step by step.

  1. 1

    Open the Legal Memo assistant

One of the ready-made assistants for law firms in your workspace.

  2. 2

Give it the facts and the question

Paste your notes or upload the documents: the complaint, the contract, the deposition summary. Say which jurisdiction applies.

  3. 3

    Work through the structure

Ask for the issues, an outline, then each section. Web search can look up current material on court and government sites and shows the sources it used.

  4. 4

    Verify, then edit

Pull and read every authority in a citator or the official source, confirm quotations and holdings, and edit the memo into your own analysis.

What to ask

Requests that work well.

Specific requests get better answers. Ask it to quote or cite what it relied on, so checking is quick.

  • Example request: Here are the facts. What issues should this memo address under Texas law?
  • Example request: Outline a memo on whether the non-compete is enforceable, with questions I need to research.
  • Example request: Draft the facts section from these notes, neutral in tone.
  • Example request: Rewrite this analysis section in plain English for the client.
  • Example request: List every case and statute in this draft so I can check each one.
  • Example request: Summarize this 200-page deposition by topic, with page and line cites.

What AI does, and what stays with your professionals.

Where Zrico helps

  • Organizing facts and spotting issues to run down
  • Outlines and first drafts of facts, discussion and conclusion sections
  • Summaries of long documents and depositions, with page references
  • Rewriting for a client audience, or into your house style

Your firm’s responsibility

  • Finding the controlling authority in your research service
  • Pulling and reading every case, statute and quotation the draft mentions
  • The legal analysis and the conclusion
  • Anything filed with a court, which you sign

Why every authority is checked

AI models can produce citations that look real and are not, or misstate what a case holds. Courts have sanctioned lawyers for filing them, and ABA Formal Opinion 512 says lawyers must review output before relying on it. Zrico is not a legal research database and does not verify citations for you.

Confidentiality

Client files stay with your firm.

How we protect your data
  • Your firm’s own workspace

Its own application and databases at its own address, never shared with another firm.

  • Never used to train AI

Anthropic, OpenAI and Google do not train their models on your prompts, files or answers.

  • Claude runs in the US

Claude, the default, is processed only in the United States. If your firm owner turns on GPT or Gemini, those requests are not limited to the US.

  • Retention you set

Keep conversations, or have them deleted after a period you choose.

Questions

Legal memos: common questions.

Can AI write a legal memo?

It can produce a well-organized first draft quickly, especially for the facts section and the structure of the analysis. The legal research and the conclusions still come from a lawyer, and every authority has to be verified.

Does it cite real cases?

Sometimes it will cite real cases correctly and sometimes it will not. When web search is used, the answer shows the pages it read, which helps you check. Treat every citation as unverified until you have pulled and read it.

Is Zrico a replacement for Westlaw or Lexis?

No. It is not a legal research database. Use it for drafting, organizing and summarizing around the research you do in your research service.

Is client information safe in a memo draft?

Drafts and uploads stay in your firm’s own workspace and are never used to train AI. Claude, the default, is processed only in the United States; GPT and Gemini stay off unless your firm owner turns them on. Your firm decides what client information goes in.
